ENGINEERING DRAWINGChecker

Find the drawing errors before the shop does.

An engineering drawing checking service. A senior CAD checker reviews your PDF drawings against ASME Y14.5 and drafting practice, and sends you a findings report of suggested corrections, each one located by sheet and zone.

We check the drawing, not the design.

We check the drawing, not the design

A drawing review answers one question: does this drawing communicate the design completely and correctly? Whether the design itself is right stays with your design engineer.

We check

  • Dimensions and tolerances: complete, not doubled, within the tolerance block
  • GD&T per ASME Y14.5: datums, feature control frames, basic dimensions
  • Notes, parts list and balloons agree with each other
  • Title block, sheet numbering and revision records
  • Holes, threads and callouts are fully specified
  • Material, finish and drafting practice

We do not check

  • Whether the part or assembly will work, fit or survive its loads
  • Strength, stress, tolerance stack-ups or material selection
  • Design for manufacturability (DFM) or cost
  • Your customer's or industry's design requirements

How a review works

Four steps: an NDA, a PDF drawing package, a checker reviewing the drawing, and a findings report with marked locations.
  1. Sign the NDA

We email you our signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Read it first if you like.

  2. Send the PDF package

Reply to checker@engineeringdrawingchecker.com with the countersigned NDA and your PDF drawings: detail drawings, assemblies with parts lists, multi-sheet sets. Tell us which ASME Y14.5 edition they follow.

  3. Human review

A senior CAD checker reviews every sheet. Software helps read the drawing; the checker confirms every finding before it reaches you.

  4. Findings report

Each suggested correction gives the sheet and zone, what to change or verify, and why it matters. Your drafter makes the changes in CAD.

What goes into a drawing review

The routine checks a senior CAD checker makes on every release, so your own reviewer can spend their time on design intent.

Title block and sheets

Blank required boxes, numbers and titles that differ between sheets, file names where part numbers belong.

Notes and parts list

Every item a note refers to is in the parts list, quantities agree, every column is filled in.

Holes, callouts and threads

Hole counts, thread series and class, depths and callout wording.

GD&T to ASME Y14.5

Datums used but never defined, zero tolerances without a modifier, locating dimensions that should be basic, a cited standard and edition.

Dimensions

Features with no size or no location, sizes given twice, more decimal places than the tolerance block covers.

Sheet metal drawings

Thickness stated, flat-pattern sizes shown as reference, bend notes and default radii.

Material, finish and notes

A material with its grade, finish and edge notes, a filled-in general tolerance block.

Revision checks

Revision table entries, letters and zones. On request, a re-check of the revised drawing against the last report.

A findings report your drafter can work through

Page one lists every suggested correction by priority. Each one then gets its own page with a picture of that spot on the drawing.

This drawing needs 3 corrections and 3 checks before release.

Example: 100-001 Mounting Plate, Rev A

This review checks drawing documentation against drafting standards. It does not verify the engineering design, function, strength or manufacturability.

Must fix

  1. Sheet 1, zone 2A: Tolerance block: ANGULAR is blank. Fill in the angle tolerance.
  2. Sheet 1, zone 4C: The positioned holes are located by ± dimensions. Make those dimensions basic.
  3. Sheet 1, zone 1A: Fill in the MATERIAL box.

Please check

  1. Sheet 1, zone 3B: Thread callout reads "1/4-20". Add the class: "1/4-20 UNC-2B".
  2. Sheet 1, zone 2C: Datum B is used in a frame, but its datum symbol is not on this sheet. Please confirm.

Suggestion

  1. Sheet 1, zone 4D: Frames mix "0.010" and ".005". Drop the leading zero in inch values.

Who reviews your drawing

Every report is reviewed and signed off by Fred Vierheller, a senior mechanical engineer and Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP).

He checks drawings against ASME Y14.5 GD&T and drawing requirements manual (DRM) practice, so the drawing says exactly what the design needs. Four years running a rapid prototyping shop taught him what happens when a drawing leaves a question open. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

You deal with one person from the first call to the last report.

How your drawing is handled

Your drawings carry your company's work and your customers' trust. Here is exactly what happens to them, and you decide before you send anything.

  • We sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before you send a drawing. Download it here (Word document).
  • Software helps read the drawing: page images are processed by Anthropic's AI service, which deletes them within 30 days by default. You approve this in advance.
  • We never edit your files. You receive a separate report.
  • We delete your drawings 30 days after the report is delivered.
  • We cannot accept ITAR-controlled, classified or contract-restricted drawings.

For complex assemblies, dense drawing sets or more sheets, book a call first and we will quote a custom review.

Questions

Do you check whether my design works?

No. We check that the drawing communicates the design completely and correctly. Function, fit, strength and material choices stay with your design engineer.

Do you do DFM reviews?

Not as part of this service. A drawing review checks the documentation, not whether the part can be made economically.

Which standards do you check against?

ASME Y14.5 for dimensioning and tolerancing, the 2018 edition or the edition your drawing cites, and ASME Y14 drawing practice.

Will you change my drawing?

Never. You receive a findings report. Your drafter makes the corrections in CAD.

Do you use AI?

Yes, as a tool. Software helps read each sheet and flags possible issues. A senior CAD checker reviews every finding before the report is delivered, and adds what the software missed.

Can you re-check the drawing after it is revised?

Yes, as a new review. We check the revised drawing against the last report, so you can show every correction was made.

Talk about your next drawing release.

Call any time. Claire, our assistant, answers 24/7 in English or Spanish, answers your questions and books a 20-minute call with Fred. No drawings are needed for the call. Prefer email? Write to hola@engineeringdrawingchecker.com.
